Scholarships to Apply for NOW

When I suggest your family start applying for scholarships, I don’t mean googling a couple and pumping out an essay the year before college starts – I mean WEEKLY and consistently applying every week for as long as your teen is enrolled!! Most scholarships are open to prospective AND enrolled students.

My recipe for the MINIMUM number of applications they should fill out each year is based on the cost they need to cover that year.  For every $100 your teen needs for this year,  apply for 1 scholarship.

This year’s need $100 = apply for 1 scholarship

This year’s need $1,000 = apply for 10 scholarships

This year’s need $10,000 = apply for 100 scholarships

Every. Single. Year.  These are the minimums!

Unless otherwise noted, you should apply for every scholarship you qualify for. You don’t have to wait until you’re out of high school or accepted into a college- start this week!

  1. Hi Jennifer,

I was wondering something. If my daughter is pursuing a dual credit degree through COSC after high school, but ends up receiving more scholarships than she can use with them, would COSC transfer the extra monies to a graduate program or a different university for a hands-on study experience (i.e. study abroad or research related class)? Or are scholarship monies specifically designated for bachelors vs. graduate programs?

Just wondering how flexible these awards tend to be.

    Thanks!

    1. I think the default answer would be “whatever the scholarship stipulates” as far as how it’s going to be used. In the case of overage, it would come back to her as a check – she could do what she wanted with it. Hope that helps!
