HBCU: Xavier University of Louisiana

All month, to honor Black History Month, I’m spotlighting a different Historically Black College and University (HBCU) for the Homeschooling for College Credit community! Xavier University of Louisiana is America’s only Historically Black and Catholic University. The university offers dual enrollment and awards college credit for CLEP and AP scores.

Dual Enrollment

Xavier University of Louisiana Dual Enrollment (called Concurrent Enrollment)

Admission to the concurrent enrollment program is competitive, mainly restricted to 11th and 12th graders but with consideration to 9th and 10th-grade students. The courses are only $250 per course but NOT delivered via distance learning, so available for local students only. Families should contact the university directly for details.

Xavier University’s summer sessions for high school students are NOT worth college credit.

Homeschooling for College Credit at Xavier University of Louisiana allows you to accumulate college credits in high school to transfer into your degree program, but only 50% of your transfer credit can come from a community college.” (Note: if you are considering this college, my recommendation is that you get clarity on this guideline during high school. I think they mean to say 50% of your “degree” but be sure to double-check so you don’t exceed any limits.) Keep in mind that even when your teen brings in college credits, they are STILL A FRESHMAN APPLICANT when those credits were earned in high school! Only students who earn college credit after high school can become “transfer applicants.”

  • All credit by exam (AP & CLEP) must be completed and sent for evaluation no later than the end of the student’s first semester. Credit by exam is not accepted after the student’s first semester is completed.
