HBCU: Tuskegee University

All month, to honor Black History Month, I’m spotlighting a different Historically Black College and University (HBCU) for the Homeschooling for College Credit community! Tuskegee University of Alabama a Historically Black University located in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Dual Enrollment

CLEP Exams

Not accepted

Homeschooling for College Credit at Tuskegee University allows you to accumulate college credits in high school to transfer into your degree program, but only dual enrollment (from a different college) and AP exams are considered for college credit.

Keep in mind that even when your teen brings in college credits, they are STILL A FRESHMAN APPLICANT when those credits were earned in high school! Only students who earn college credit after high school can become “transfer applicants.”

Tuskegee specifically allows students to take classes in the summer immediately following graduation without changing their status to “transfer student.” Note that this is a special exception and not generally the case at most universities.

Academic Advising FAQ document

Does Tuskegee University accept AP, IB, Dual Enrolled, and/or College Credits?
• Yes. AP scores of 3 or above, IB scores of 4 or above, and College Credits with a grade of “C” or higher. The course(s) must be similar to those taught at Tuskegee University.
• We do not accept remedial or elementary courses.

Unlike most colleges and universities, Tuskegee does not share its course equivalency list with the public. This makes it challenging to develop a Homeschooling for College Credit plan to accumulate credits in advance.

When a course equivalency list is unknown, the best strategy is to look at a college’s General Education requirements, and line them up as best as you can with your homeschool’s high school plan and look for overlap in subjects. Based on typical high school courses and the requirements outlined by Tuskegee, the following strategy outlines the approach I would take if I were planning this college as a target school for my son. I’ve matched up AP exams, but you can look for dual enrollment courses with the same or similar titles offered through your dual enrollment college. I’ve included the full name of the Tuskegee courses and their credits to make this easier for you to plan the dual enrollment courses. If you want to read the course descriptions for each course, you can follow the link below and click on the specific course title. I hope you find that helpful planning around the challenges of this university.

Based on the tuition and fees table provided by the university, you can estimate that each AP exam your teen successfully completes (score of 3 or higher) or dual enrollment course that applies to the degree, will save you about $2,000 each.
