2U Buys edX for $800 Million

Big news – see what this means for HS4CC families!

LANHAM, Md., June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — 2U, Inc. (Nasdaq: TWOU), a global leader in education technology, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of edX’s assets, including the edX brand, website, and marketplace, for $800 million in cash consideration.

What does this means for HS4CC families?

It’s too soon to say for sure, but here are the 3 prongs of this event that I’m watching:

  • New big list of partner colleges “2U’s network will expand to include more than 230 partners—including over 185 nonprofit colleges and universities and 19 of the top 20 ranked universities globally.”
  • More classes “2U will have a combined and complementary portfolio of more than 3,500 offerings from the world’s top universities and corporations”
  • Affordable credentials? “2U has committed to continuing to pursue the edX mission by, among other things, guaranteeing affordability through the continuation of a free track to audit.”
