As required by my state’s law, my teen will take a standardized test this year. I have one son who builds computers from scratch, one who builds race engines from scratch, one who operates a small business, and one who is an exceptional welder. Not a single test question will highlight their gifts or talents in these areas.
As a reminder, tests are written to measure a specific type of knowledge. No matter what test you use this year, your teen’s gifts and talents won’t be quantified by that one test. Learning and remembering what is already known is just one kind of skill. Most of life hasn’t been invented yet.
