HBCU: Spelman College

Spelman College is a private historically black women’s liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The college is part of the Atlanta University Center academic consortium in Atlanta and has a wonderful CLEP and AP acceptance policy!

Spelman full transfer policy

Homeschooling for College Credit at Spelman allows you to accumulate up to 60 college credits in high school to transfer into your degree program. Keep in mind that even when your teen brings in 60 credits, they are STILL A FRESHMAN APPLICANT when those credits were earned in high school! Only students who earn college credit after high school can become “transfer applicants.”

Spelman also offers summer sessions for high school students worth college credit. Note that these are not free, but allow your student access to the campus and resources! If going to campus is not an option, they also have online summer sessions worth college credit. Spelman Summer Programs

SPECIAL ADVICE Spelman only allows students to use CLEP when it is earned before enrollment. Their website states that students starting in August must have their CLEP scores sent over before end of January of that same year! This is really important for homeschooling parents who may be planning CLEP in their teen’s 12th grade spring or summer session. My recommendation is that you use CLEP up through the 12th grade fall term and then only use dual enrollment for the spring term.

Advanced Placement

An applicant who submits a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Entrance Examination Board’s Advanced Placement Program Examinations will be awarded college credit and/
or advanced placement in the following subject areas: art, biology, computer science, economics, French, German, government and politics, human geography, Latin, mathematics (Calculus AB Examination), physics, psychology, Spanish and statistics. A score of at least 4 must be obtained for credit in chemistry, English, history, and music.
The number of credits awarded for each subject will be equivalent to one semester of credit or 4 semester hours. Students who present scores of 3, 4, or 5 on the Calculus
BC Examination will receive the equivalent of two semesters of credit, or 8 semester hours in mathematics. A student may be eligible to apply for exemption from
some of the core curriculum or divisional requirements on the basis of advanced placement scores. A student who earns a 4 on the English AP examination or a 5 or better on the higher level IB examination may receive college credit but she must register for ENG103/193 to fulfill the core curriculum requirement. A student must notifying the Office of the Registrar in writing of her intent to use these scores.
