2022 CLEP Exam Revision & Expiration Dates

We occasionally see CLEP exams revised or removed. This is the expected CLEP revision and expiration date schedule for 2022.

Understand how to interpret this information:

The American Council on Education is the third-party review organization that colleges use to decide if a class or exam is “worth” college credit or not. In other words, CLEP exams are worth college credit because they have undergone review by ACE.

When ACE reviews an exam, they assign a date range for that exam’s review. At the expiration date, the exam can be:

  • Renewed. A new ending date is given without significant changes to the exam
  • Reviewed. The exam can be reviewed by ACE again when significant changes to the exam occur.
  • Removed. This happens when a company removes a product from the market.

By carefully watching what happens to a CLEP exam when it’s expiration date approaches, we can form an educated guess about what’s going on with that the exam’s content.

As an example, we’ve watched the Biology exam renew ever period since 2001. As such, we can feel confident that the exam has not changed that much since 2001 because the date simply keeps getting extended for another 3-year cycle.

United States History 1 had remained unchanged since 2001, but during their last deadline, we saw an assignment of a new date range renewal  “12/1/2018 – 11/30/2023” which tells us that the exam was revised.

College Board doesn’t announce exam revisions, but this imperfect system allows us to unofficially monitor what is happening behind the scenes.

As you look at this chart, the “approval” column tells you when the current version of the CLEP came into use. Be sure to pick study guides no older than the approval date for that exam.
