17 Courses offered by Gateway Education Set to Expire this Month

UPDATE: These courses were renewed through October 31, 2023.

What is ACE and Why Do I Care?

The companies/organizations in this category sell courses “for college credit” that have been evaluated by the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE credit is not as transferable as credit earned directly through a college, but can be very transferable when used with the intention of transferring to one of the partner colleges. ACE is a third party credit evaluator that evaluates all types of learning that happens outside of a college. This kind of college credit is guaranteed to transfer into partner colleges (varies by provider) but transfers poorly outside of partnerships.

Using ACE credit requires creating an account with another third party, Credly to “hold” your teen’s credit until they’re ready to use it. HS4CC List of ACE Partners

Many companies use ACE to evaluate their courses. When a course is evaluated by ACE for college credit, it only holds that evaluation for a period of time (usually 3 years). At the end of that period, the company must seek to have their courses renewed. Since companies pay to have this evaluation, it’s possible that a company may use the course’s expiration date as a time to retire a course, replace the course, or perform a significant change to the course.

The Most Important Thing

On occasion, a course may expire but the course does not get removed from a company’s sales page. You must pay attention to expiration dates because if the course does not get renewed, your course is NOT WORTH COLLEGE CREDIT.

What Usually Happens

Usually, a course is renewed and any possible gap is back-dated by ACE to cover students who may have completed a course during the gap. In companies that have been around for a very long time (Gateway has been around for 30 years) renewal usually happens and the consumer is none the wiser.

Don’t Panic, But Be Aware

ACE evaluation always expires. Every company that receives an ACE evaluation (CLEP, AP, DSST, Studycom, Sophia, Saylor Academy, ALEKS, etc.) each owe their product’s credit status to ACE. Without a current ACE evaluation, the courses are not “worth” credit, so a company is HIGHLY MOTIVATED to make sure the courses do get renewed and do get evaluated.

What to do?

If your company uses Gateway Education, message them RIGHT NOW and let them know you use their courses and hope they renew their ACE evaluation.
