From my email inbox today: Sophia is launching 2 new courses and made changes to several from their current catalog! All interesting, but the BIG deal is that they are launching their first science lab! Details below.

Courses launching soon include:

Chemistry Lab

Sophia already offers several non-lab sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Nutrition, and Environmental Science. The addition of the Chemistry Lab will be their first lab offering! As such, I don’t have much to go on in terms of how the content will be delivered, but I do expect this to be a 1-credit stand-alone based on the way this was announced. It wasn’t announced as Introduction to Chemistry will be revised “to include lab” rather it is being announced as a course.

Precalculus

Sophia already offers a full sequence of maths all the way through Calculus 1, so Precalculus’ absence was clearly noticed. The current course offerings and new sequence are as follows:

NEW Course (available now)

Critical Thinking
ACE® recommendation: 3 credits

In this course, students will learn how to think more critically by questioning assumptions and biases and being aware of fallacies. Students will learn to interpret and write deductive and inductive arguments and apply these to real-life situations.

Current Courses Undergoing CHANGES

Microeconomics

Updated with minor improvements, incorporating new instruction and up-to-date examples. While the syllabi may reflect some minor differences, the overall course outcomes remain unchanged. Any students currently active in the previous versions will not experience any disruptions and will be able to complete their active course. Course names, ACE® course numbers, and ACE®-recommended credits will not be affected at this time.

The Future of Work –> Career Readiness

Renamed and reworked into Career Readiness. The new course focuses on teaching skills and behaviors that support career development and professional growth. Students will be immersed in real-world situations, including how to write resumes, create effective cover letters, negotiate outcomes, and network with colleagues.
Students currently enrolled in Preparing for the Future of Work will have until January 2nd, 2023 to complete the course, and will not experience any disruption.
If students previously completed “Preparing for the Future of Work,” they will not be able to enroll in “Career Readiness. This is a more comprehensive version of Introduction to Career Readiness, the 1-credit ACE®-recommended course we launched in October 2022. It is your choice whether to map both, however, we recommend that students only complete one of the two due to slight content overlap.
