Parent Review: ASL Online DE @ Pierpont

Carie, HS4CC parent, shares some valuable info about her daughter’s online American Sign Language dual enrollment course being taken though Pierpont Community & Technical College.

Pierpont Community & Technical College (West Virginia)
Public 2-year college
Program Name: Dual enrollment
Cost $75 per COURSE, $25 per credit, book costs vary.
More information

American Sign Language for dual enrollment offered online to students of any state is extremely rare. In fact, this is the ONLY college I have in my notes that offers the option. Carie was kind enough to share feedback with me. They are in their first semester, so I hope to have more feedback once she completes additional courses.

In addition, some special things to know:

  1. The cost is only $25 per credit (!)
  2. They offer an entire catalog of ASL courses- see below
  3. You can complete an Associate Degree with an Area of Emphasis in ASL

Parent Feedback

“My daughter has been taking the sign language class at Pierpont Community & Technical College through their dual credit program. It has been going really well and the gal we have been working with on the Dual Enrollment team is Joni. My daughter is taking ASL II after this class. She did have one prior year of sign language so she went right into the ASL I class versus taking the Intro to ASL, as a beginner may want to start here.

We paid $75 per class and it came with a lab. ($25 per credit)

There is an instructor for the class, but she uses 2 other companies for curriculum (ASL Online and DawnsignPress) which includes videos and doing your homework via recorded video within that curriculum, then turning it into the instructor at Pierpont.

You have to purchase access to those curriculums in both the class and lecture for the class. The interactive online materials for lab were $64.95 and the ASL Online was around $80 but the purchase includes materials for ASL 1 and ASL 2 so she won’t need to purchase these again when she takes ASL 2 next.

She took the accelerated classes so they are 5 weeks long versus the 10 week long classes. She is just finishing up ASL 1 this Friday and starts ASL 2 on Monday the 31st. I believe the next available classes start Spring Semester. I think she will continue to take upper level ASL classes as well. Hope that helps!”
