Member Question: My father in law wants to learn Greek, obviously not homeschool age. Do you have any resources?

I sure do! When you take out the “college credit” requirement and switch to personal interest, there are a lot of great opportunities. These resources below offer learning the Greek language for very low cost, and should he decide he needs college credit, I have an option to turn his learning into college credit by testing out.

College Credit

The ACTFL Proficiency Exam is open to anyone and worth potential college credit at colleges that accept ACE credit. There are over 100 languages you can test out of, including Greek. Each test is worth 3-12 college credits (upper and lower)

The American Council (ACE) on Education’s College Credit Recommendation Service (ACE CREDIT) has evaluated and recommended college credit for ACTFL OPI, OPIc, WPT, LPT and RPT. See list of credit awards here.

ACTFL Assessments

Five assessments are available for earning college credits:

ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI)

The OPI is a valid and reliable means of assessing how well a person speaks a language. It is a 30-minute one-on-one telephonic interview between a certified ACTFL tester and an examinee. The interview is interactive and continuously adapts to the interests and abilities of the speaker.

ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview – computer (OPIc ®)

The OPIc is a 40-minute internet-delivered test which provides valid and reliable oral proficiency testing. It was developed to emulate the ‘live’ OPI; a virtual avatar takes the place of a live tester and offers questions based on the interests and experience of the test-taker, which are gathered during the survey phase at the beginning of the test. The test is recorded and assessed by ACTFL Certified Raters and an official certificate will be issued.

ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

The WPT is a standardized test of global language proficiency in writing; it measures how well a person writes in a language by comparing the performance of specific writing tasks on practical, social, and professional topics.

ACTFL Reading Proficiency Test (RPT)

The RPT is a standardized, internet-delivered test of global language proficiency in reading. RPTs measure how well a person understands written discourse. RPT passages and items address a range of informal/formal speech on general, social, and academic topics. It is auto-graded and an official certificate is issued.

ACTFL Listening Proficiency Test (LPT)

The LPT is a standardized, internet-delivered test of global language proficiency in listening. LPTs measure how well a person understands spoken discourse. LPT passages and items address a range of informal/formal speech on general, social, and academic topics. It is auto-graded and an official certificate is issued.

Test Scheduling and Proctoring

All tests must be proctored either on location by an authorized proctor or remotely using our web-based providers.

Web-Based Proctoring: Web-based proctoring allows you to take and schedule your test with a remote proctor that will monitor your computer and activity via webcam as you take your test. The OPIc, Internet-based WPT, RPT & LPT can be taken the same day they are ordered through web-based proctoring. The OPI, which is taken over the phone with a live ACTFL tester, must be scheduled 10 days in advance.

Proctoring Site: If your test is being proctored on site, you’ll need to contact the desired proctoring facility and identify 2 different dates at least 10 days from the day you order the test. You will need to provide those dates when ordering your test(s). All the tests can be taken on the same day.

Confirmations: For OPIs, you and the proctor will receive an email confirmation advising the date/time when the test has been scheduled. For the OPIc, WPT, LPT, and RPT the test will be available as soon as the web-based remote proctoring provider receives instructions and access information. When ordering you will select a time for your remotely-proctored test, which may be later on the same day as the order is placed if you wish.
