NCCRS (The National College Credit Recommendation Service) is a third party credit evaluator that evaluates all types of learning that happens outside of a college. A company may market and sell courses “for college credit” that have been evaluated by NCCRS. While there are almost 1,500 colleges that “may consider” NCCRS credit, only when a company has a formal written partnership with a college should this credit be considered transferable. Unlike ACE, there is no NCCRS holding place for credit, so if a company goes out of business before you need the credit, it may be lost. Most colleges do NOT accept NCCRS credit.
Who are Coopersmith, Davar, OnlineDegree, and Law Shelf? They are businesses that sell online courses. Note that students who plan to use OnlineDegree must be 18 years old or older, and Davar does not have any written partnerships published on their website.
What is a partnership? A partnership is a written agreement between a business and a college. It guarantees that certain courses or credits will be accepted at the college. Partnerships are perishable, please be sure you confirm a partnership is active before you register. Note that a company website may be old! Confirm with the college, not the company.
What if my target college doesn’t have a partnership? It is highly unlikely that the credit earned outside of a partnership agreement will count at your college. You should contact your college’s REGISTRAR (not admissions) to see if these type of courses are considered. It is highly unlikely that a college will give you a firm answer unless your student is already enrolled.
